Deer Point Reservoir drawdown to begin Nov. 20

Bay County Utilities will begin its annual winter drawdown of Deer Point Reservoir on Friday, Nov. 20, as recommended by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). The drawdown will continue through March 1, 2027.

The reservoir will be reduced to approximately 2.5 feet below its normal elevation during the drawdown, which is intended to reduce excessive aquatic vegetation and improve the overall health of the body of water.

FWC’s 2026 survey indicated an increase in vegetation coverage, prompting the recommendation for a winter drawdown. Exposing shoreline vegetation to drying conditions and potentially freezing temperatures can help control nuisance aquatic plants. The drawdown also allows nutrients to be consolidated and released from exposed shoreline sediments, improves fishing and boating access, and enhances fish and wildlife habitat, including sportfish spawning areas.

Waterfront property owners who plan to manually remove vegetation from their shoreline should consult with FWC to determine acceptable practices and whether a permit is necessary. Chemical treatment is prohibited.

The drawdown also provides an opportunity for waterfront property owners to make repairs to docks and bulkheads. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) must approve and permit major projects. Property owners considering repairs or improvements should contact FDEP to determine applicable requirements and whether a permit is necessary.

Boaters and other recreational users should exercise caution during the drawdown, as lower water levels may expose submerged hazards and affect access in shallow areas.
